Welcome to ICEM'2012 in Marseille, France On behalf of the ICEM’2012 Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you all in th Marseille, the largest city of the South of France for the XX edition of the International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM). It is really a great honour and a pleasure as well to have the privilege to host this conference in the city where I was born and where I studied up to the end of the high school. Marseille as well as Corsica has a very special place in my heart and I did put pressure on the ICEM’2012 Organizing Committee members to make ICEM’2012 as successful as all the previous editions. The ICEM has established itself as an influential and recognized international event, being the only major international conference entirely devoted to electrical machines. Started in London in 1974, ICEM is now established as a regular biennial event. Very successful recent editions were held in Helsinki (Finland) in 2000, Bruges (Belgium) in 2002, Cracow (Poland) in 2004, Chania (Greece) in 2006, Vilamoura (Portugal) in 2008 and Roma (Italy) in 2010. Even if ICEM is an independent non-profit organization, it has started link with the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) with a technical co-sponsorship of societies starting in 2006. This has been the consequence of a real jump in quality and now ICEM papers are published in one of the most important scientific data bases in the world, the so-called IEEEXplore. Moreover, ICEM papers are now more referenced than in the past due to what IEEE is providing in term of international visibility. For the 2012 edition, ICEM has received the technical cosponsorship of IEEE Industry Applications Society, Industrial Electronics Society, Power & Energy Society and also of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. This is the second time ICEM is coming in France after the 1994 edition in Paris. The choice of Marseille has been based on the fact that it is situated in the second French area in term of innovation and number of researchers in the field of sciences and technology. Even if needed, the technical visit will confirm this fact. With its 26 centuries of history, Marseille is a city full of art and culture which has many wonders to share with you. Moreover, the city combines tradition and modernity. Marseille is deeply marked by its past and is constantly digging up the remains of all the cities that have been built on top of each other over the centuries. It takes the visitor on a journey that begins with its Greek and Roman origins and leads us past the medieval religious foundations, the 16th Century fortifications, the rich homes of the 17th and 18th Centuries and the many prestigious buildings erected in the 19th Century and right up to modern times and the great architectural achievements of the 21st Century. In 2013, Marseille will be the European Capital of Culture (MP2013). The ICEM’2012 Organizing Committee wishes you a very successful conference in which you will certainly attend interesting technical sessions, you will meet new friends and colleagues for further collaborations and you will return back home with new ideas from this exciting technical field of electrical machines. Enjoy Marseille, enjoy ICEM’2012 and do make it a memorable event! Gérard-André Capolino ICEM’2012 General Chair 3

Message from the Technical Program Co-Chairs The XXth edition of ICEM is a major event of the worldwide engineering community working in the field of electrical machines and their applications. It was therefore a great honour and a pleasure for us to be responsible for the technical program of ICEM’2012. This is the fourth time after Chania in 2006, Vilamoura in 2008 and Roma in 2010, that ICEM proposes its new shape to participants and to authors with the technical cosponsorship of IEEE. For this purpose, it has been asked to submit a full provisional version of each paper for both regular tracks and special sessions. For the 2012 edition, the Organizing Committee has proposed to participants: 5 tutorials 7 tracks for regular papers 11 special sessions on “hot” topics A student forum A technical exhibition with 10 booths An exciting technical visit of the ITER project Altogether, 672 papers have been submitted and 469 will be in the final program involving around 1,800 authors from 44 countries in the world. The mean number of reviews per paper has been 2.93 involving close to 1,600 reviewers. In the technical program, the papers have been splitted in 3 poster sessions of around 100 papers each and 30 oral sessions of 6 papers each. The Technical Program represents the integrated effort of many individuals, namely, authors, reviewers, track co-chairs, special session organizers, and the National Scientific Committee members, whom we thank for their contributions to the success of ICEM’2012. It is our strong opinion that the world's state of the art in electrical machines is well represented across both technical tracks and special sessions. However, if few words have to be chosen, then "embedded, grid-connected, design, control and condition monitoring" are our choices of keywords that summarize the large majority of presentations. We look forward to the intellectual stimulation of all participants, and thank you again for attending ICEM’2012. Bienvenue à Marseille!
