The Helsel Family Story Huntington’s Disease can take away your voice. The Huntington’s Disease Society of America describes Huntington’s Disease (HD) as, “a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain . . . Many describe the symptoms of HD as having ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s – simultaneously.” Pauline Helsel, was one of the longest surviving people with HD. She was cared for by Foss staff during a time when she could no longer speak more than a few words. In hopes of finding a cure, Pauline and her family made arrangements to have her brain donated to science so that researchers could understand more about this disease.

Now his nephew Lewis visits him on the weekends and will read stories to him. Karen and Marvin use Skype to visit with their children and grandchildren who live far away. Marvin’s wife, Karen, is his advocate, “I had felt that my job, and here at Foss it’s still the same, is to speak for Marvin because he doesn’t speak for himself.” Karen helps the Foss staff understand his preferences and needs. She helps them identify his unique facial expressions – whether it’s his sad face, the twinkle in his eye when he’s happy or his silent laughter.

Pauline’s son, Marvin Helsel Jr., also has this disease and is currently living at Foss. One of Marvin’s

“As I Age . . . I become wiser . . . most of the time.” - David Crouch Last year, at the LeadingAge annual convention in Nashville, Tennessee, our senior team was inspired by an “As I Age…” art mural. This mural was an adaptation of art installations by Candy Chang whose 500 murals are sparking conversations in 70 countries. I’m pleased to announce that Foss has installed a giant chalkboard on the corner of 130th and Greenwood to engage the public in a discussion about how each of us would like to age. I would like to invite you to swing by, grab a piece of chalk and add your voice to the “As I Age...” conversation. Over 130 of our employees have worked at Foss for 10 or more years. This means staff members get to know our residents, discover how

each of them would like to age and then provide health services and activities to support their wishes. Residents share preferences with us through Resident Council meetings and in one-to-one conversations. Family members advocate for their loved ones who can no longer speak, helping us know how to care for them. One thing is clear: community is an essential part of aging well. Come be a part of the Foss community. Write on our art mural. Attend our Farmers Market. Become a Foss volunteer. Follow us on Facebook. Make a financial gift in honor of an older adult. Between 800-1,000 guests are anticipated to visit the Foss Farmers Market. There will be live music, fresh produce for purchase and handcrafted items for sale. Join us for this annual event on the Foss Village courtyard - just off N. 130th Street and 1st Avenue N.W. Should you wish to make a purchase, please come prepared to pay with cash or check.

Summer Produce Tips • STORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES SEPARATELY. Many fruits release ethylene gas (the ripening agent) which can cause other foods to spoil and change the flavor of the more sensitive greens. • DON’T REFRIGERATE EVERYTHING. Basil and tomatoes maintain optimum freshness by staying out of the cold. Non-cherry stone fruits, apples, pears, avocados, mangoes and melons can continue to ripen on the countertop. However, some items like bell peppers, grapes and berries can deteriorate quickly and would benefit from refrigeration. • USE YOUR MOST PERISHABLE PRODUCE FIRST. Save the hardier vegetables for later in the week. Also, if some of your vegetables are looking slightly wilted, consider throwing them together in a stir-fry. • BAG UP YOUR PRODUCE. It’s not a good idea to store produce directly in the refrigerator. Take any twistties off the bags and loosen up the vegetables so they are not bunched together. You can even poke a few holes in the bag to help with circulation. This will prevent veggies from rotting. SOME CURRENT NEEDS: • We can use people to help with Friday Socials from 1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. • We need volunteers to interview residents about their music history for the MUSIC & MEMORYSM program. • We want early risers who can help setup at the Farmers Market from 7:15 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Music and Memory Last fall Foss became a MUSIC & MEMORYSM Certified Care Facility. The hope was that some residents, who for a variety of reasons aren’t always able to fully participate in other activities, would benefit from a personal music playlist. Unique playlists for each person based on her favorite songs, genres and artists were developed by our staff. The hope is that the music would elicit wonderful memories and good feelings of the past. Residents are enjoying their music playlists so much, that staff are having a hard time convincing residents to let them charge the iPods so that more music can be enjoyed later! Lois is one resident to whom the MUSIC & MEMORYSM program has brought joy. Lois comes from a musical family. Two of Lois’ older sisters 4

would call up the phone operator, tell her to get the whole town on the line and they would give the town a phone concert. She played the organ and the piano. She also sang Opera. Her voice teacher wanted her to try out for the San Francisco Opera Company, but Lois had other plans. She became an architectural drafter for the City of Seattle. Lois typically listens to her playlist about once a day and finds it relaxing. On her iPod she has opera, piano, symphony and classical music. SPRING BRUNCH RECAP Orange cinnamon croissant bread pudding with a side of crispy bacon was the yummy meal enjoyed by the nearly 200 guests who attended the Foss annual Spring Brunch held at the Lynnwood Convention Center. Libby Wagner was an artful storyteller weaving purpose and poetry into a beautiful blend. She inspired attendees with her message on finding your true voice, while also conveying the importance of Foss Home and Village’s mission with her eloquent and gracious language. Guests added their voice to the “As I Age...” prompt through an inspiring collection of mini chalkboards. All of the net proceeds from this event will support the Foss Extra Touch which is our commitment to personalized quality, comfort and innovation in aging services regardless of individual financial circumstances or limited government funding.
