Haarlem is één van de mooiste oude steden van Nederland. De stad ligt aan de rivier het Spaarne en heeft een prachtige, monumentale binnenstad met veel bezienswaardigheden. Met meer dan 4.000 rijks- en gemeentemonumenten en is Haarlem na Amsterdam de tweede Monumentenstad van ons land. In de goed bewaarde historische binnenstad bevinden zich meer dan 1000 beschermde monumenten.

Haarlem is one of the most beautiful old cities in the Netherlands. The city lies on the river Spaarne and has a stunning historic city centre with many attractions. With over 4,000 municipal and national listed monuments, it is the Netherlands’ second city, after Amsterdam, in terms of listed buildings and monuments. There are more than 1,000 listed monuments in the well-preserved historic city centre.

Aan de Grote Markt, het oudste deel van de stad en ooit toernooiveld van de Graven van Holland, liggen het Middeleeuwse stadhuiscomplex, de Hoofdwacht, de Grote of St. Bavokerk en de Vleeshal. Maar ook elders in de stad zijn talloze monumenten te bewonderen zoals de Waag, de Janskerk, waar het Noord-Hollands Archief is gevestigd, de kloveniersdoelen en de Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo aan de Leidsevaart. Verder telt Haarlem 21 hofjes, waarvan het oudste dateert uit 1395.

Situated in Grote Markt square, the oldest part of the city and once the tournament field of the Counts of Holland, are the medieval town hall complex, the Hoofdwacht (Main Guardhouse), Grote or St. Bavokerk (St Bavo’s Church) and the Vleeshal (Meat Hall). But there are many more monuments to admire across the entire city such as the Waag (Weighhouse), Janskerk (St John’s Church) where you will find the Noord-Hollands Archief (Municipal Archives of Noord-Holland), Kloveniersdoelen (former headquarters of the civic guard) and Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo (St Bavo’s Cathedral) at Leidsevaart. In addition, there are also 21 hofjes (courtyards with almshouses), the oldest of which dates back to 1395.

En Pathé Haarlem biedt een mooie entourage voor een filmavond.

In Teylers Museum, het eerste en oudste museum van Nederland (1784), waant men zich in de 18e eeuw. Teylers Museum is genomineerd voor de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Het Dolhuys laat de bezoeker op interactieve wijze kennismaken met de geschiedenis van de psychiatrie. Haarlem will be celebrating Frans Hals Jaar in 2013, in honour of the centenary of the Frans Hals Museum. A visit to Teylers Museum, the first and oldest museum in the Netherlands (1784), is like stepping back into the 18th century. Teylers Museum is nominated for inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Museum Het Dolhuys offers visitors an interactive experience of the history of psychiatry. 4. Doopsgezinde Kerk

Midden in het centrum van Haarlem ligt de verscholen Doopsgezinde Kerk, gebouwd in 1683 in Hollands classicistische stijl. De inrichting is sober. De akoestiek is zo goed dat er regelmatig muziekopnames worden gemaakt en concerten gegeven. Er is bijna geen omgevingsgeluid. Dat is ook prettig tijdens conferenties en symposia.

The Doopsgezinde Kerk (Mennonite Church) hidden away in the centre of Haarlem was built in 1683 in the Dutch classical style. The décor is simple. The acoustic is so good that recordings and concerts often take place here. There is almost no background noise. This also makes it good for conferences and symposiums.

Behalve de kerkzaal is ook de Van Braghtzaal te huur. Voor kleinere vergaderingen zijn er diverse stijlkamers uit 1902. De ruime bibliotheek leent zich uitstekend voor vergaderingen of lezingen.

In addition to the church hall, the Van Braghtzaal can also be hired. For smaller meetings there are various period rooms dating back to 1902. The spacious library is also excellent for meetings or lectures.

Parkeergarages De Kamp en De Appelaar liggen op 5 minuten loopafstand. Catering (biologisch en streekproducten) kan worden verzorgd door De Wereld van Jansje, de winkel/lunchroom waar mensen met een beperking werken. Elke zondagochtend is er om 10.30 uur kerkdienst.

Parking garages De Kamp and De Appelaar are 5 minutes’ walk away. Catering (organic and local) can be provided by De Wereld van Jansje, a shop and lunchroom staffed by people with disabilities. There is a church service every Sunday at 10:30.

Al eeuwen bepaalt de Grote of Sint-Bavokerk het silhouet van Haarlem. Fier rijst de toren als een uitroepteken boven de stad. Van het totale complex zijn drie markante monumenten geconserveerd en ingericht voor hergebruik. Dat zijn het Oliehuis, de Turbinehal en het Energiehuis, samen met diverse subruimtes en gezellige kookstudio is het een unieke locatie bij diverse mogelijkheden. Corporate and cultural events venue De Lichtfabriek is the beating heart of Nieuwe Energie (New Energy), the centre for creative industry. All the gas and electricity supplying the whole of Haarlem was once produced on these premises, a reminder of the industrial era. Built in 1896 in neoclassical style, it is a fine expression of this exceptional style. Haarlem is very easily accessible, both by car and public transport.

Auto Haarlem is centraal gelegen ten opzichte van Amsterdam (17 km), Schiphol (12 km), Utrecht (46 km) en andere steden in de Randstad. Uitvalswegen waaronder de A208 en A9 verbinden Haarlem met de rest van de regio. Badplaatssen Bloemendaal aan Zee en Zandvoort liggen op ca. 10 km afstand.

By car Haarlem enjoys a central location in relation to Amsterdam (17 km), Schiphol (12 km), Utrecht (46 km) and other cities in the Randstad region. Main roads including the A208 and A9 motorways connect Haarlem to the rest of the region. The seaside resorts of Bloemendaal aan Zee and Zandvoort are approximately 10 km away.

Parking Parking facilities in Haarlem include the following public car parks: Stationsplein, de Raaks, Houtplein, de Appelaar, de Kamp and Cronjé. By public transport Haarlem has two train stations, one in the city centre, Haarlem station, and one on the outskirts of the city, Haarlem Spaarnwoude station. The train journey from Amsterdam to Haarlem only takes 15 minutes; the journey from Haarlem to Zandvoort takes 10 minutes. Bloemendaal, Overveen, Santpoort Zuid and Noord and Heemsteede all have their own train stations.
